Samsung Versus Apple
|Article first published as Samsung Versus Apple on Technorati.|
Being a Galaxy S user myself, the only similarity I can find between the iPhone and myPhone is the way the applications are presented to the user.Apple didn’t stop here and claims that Samsung has also copied the iPhone’s design.Samsung, in turn retaliated by saying that they had conducted their own R&D for the products and that they were willing to contest the allegations made by Apple.
“Rather than innovate and develop its own technology and a unique Samsung style for its smartphone products and computer tablets, Samsung chose to copy Apple’s technology, user interface and innovative style in these infringing products,” Apple has claimed in the lawsuit.
The accusations made by Apple are absolutely baseless because Samsung’s products use the Android platform and Apple’s products use the iOS platform.
Agreed, that Apple has been a leader and “innovator” in the smartphone and tablet market but, Apple is clearly pulling down the competition. Apple has gone and sued God-knows-how-many companies (HTC and Nokia, to name a few) over infringement of copyrights just because these companies have achieved more than they could, in a shorter span of time. So, basically, Apple is pretty scared that Android has taken over the market in such a short amount of time and need to do something to pull down Google’s OS. So much for portraying IBM as Big Brother in 1984, eh?
But, what spices up this lawsuit is the fact that Apple is Samsung’s second largest investor (Sony being the first). Apple had invested around $100 million in Samsung for their high-resolution displays, which are currently used in the iPad and the iPhone. Also, the A5 and A4 processors that those fancy iPads and iPhones are flaunting, are made by Samsung. The Solid State Drives of the MacBook Air and the memory chips of the MacBook Pro are also manufactured by Samsung. So, if Samsung suddenly stops manufacturing, no prizes for the one who guesses that Apple will be in some deep trouble.
I’d like to end with a Steve ‘Hypocrite’ Jobs quote- “We’ve always been shameless about stealing great ideas.”
I bet this is going to haunt him for the rest of his life. ;)
